National Team Relay Triathlon Championship - Nottingham, Saturday 11th August For the first time in many years, the National Relays doesn't clash with The London Triathlon. We also figured that with club numbers on the up, it was about time we got some teams entered and had a good club day/weekend away. The event is held at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, which is the National Water Sports Centre - if you've been to Eton (Dorney Lake) and either ridden around or raced, it's like that!! The event is a relay of 400m swim / 15km bike (3 laps of lake), 5 km run (1 lap of lake), teams of 4 (Men / Ladies / Vets / Mixed) - everyone does all disciplines. The first swimmer swims, tags next etc....last swimmer tags 1st cyclist (who would have been the first swimmer!)...and you keep going until the last runner finishes. It's a really fun event, and becaue it's completely traffic free and laps, you get to see a lot and also cheer on your team while you wait for your turn (so you also get a short break in betwee disciplines). It's the nearest you get to triathlon in a stadium. In order to try and generate numbers, we're looking to pay the team entry fees from club funds - what more do you want! Oh, there is camping available on site as well, and if you fancy even more racing, you can stay over and race the Nottingham Triathlon (same venue) on the Sunday. Relays : http://www.pacesetterevents.com/national-team-relay.php
If you are interested in racing, please can you send your name to Clark Schofield (Clark.Schofield@rbs.co.uk).
A few updates for you this week: West London Combine (WLC) 25-mile Time Trial - The next event is on Sunday 6th May (NOTE - This is the same day as our Bank Holiday Adults & Kids Duathlons at Minet Park), organised by Hemel Hempstead CC. Contact Ian by email or phone on 020 8621 4341. Club Time Trial 10 - Black Park - Thursday 19th April - Our first Club-10 of the year is on the Black Park / Pinewood Studios course. First rider of at 7pm. Registration / sign-on will be in the Car Park of 'The Stag' Pub on Wexham Street, Stoke Poges, which is close to the start in Rowley Lane. No need to enter in advance, just sign up on the night. ALSO, for those wanting to get in some 'brick' training, Richard Nash will be organising a 5km warm-down run in and around Black Park immediately after the event, so bring your running shoes along too! Of course, drinks are available in the pub afterwards... Swim Time Trials - the next timed swims will be as part of the normal club session on Wednesday 18th April (Yiewsley Pool). Times from previous sessions are available in this spreadsheet.
Here is the list of Hillingdon Members entered for this Sunday's 10-Mile TT on the Maidenhead Thicket Course. HQ is Knowl Hill Village Hall (where you need to sign-on and collect your number), which is also ideal for spectators & family etc, as the riders pass this point in both directions, plus you can keep stocked up on tea, coffee and cake... If you are on this list but know you won't be riding, please let me know. Similarly, if you are not on the list but would like to ride, again contact me, and we will try and fit you in if anyone drops out.
If you wish to race in this Time Trial (entry is free to members) then you need to email Ian Birch THIS WEEKEND. Closing date for entries is Tuesday 20th, so please get in touch with Ian if you wish to race.

"To all
Hillingdon Triathletes,

A huge turnout for last nights club time trial, with a total of 40 riders starting - Dave Towers being the unlucky man to puncture at the far end of the course. The event also incorporated this years Hillingdon Triathletes ' Handicap' Championship, which was hotly contested with plenty of personal bests and seasons bests recorded on the night. The winner though (for the 2nd straight year!) was Annie Birch, whose 29:22 on the night, represented an improvement of almost 2 minutes on last week, giving her a net time of 21:34. Not far behind, Steve Gardner (2nd), Colette O'Neill (3rd), Steve Hyett, Chris Pinnell, Bob Thomas, Ed Darnell, David Knight, Jacob Gloor and Simon Claridge (amongst others) all recorded their best times of the year so far. Full Results are here.
Hillingdon have entered a number of teams into a 'Dawn till Dusk' type Mountain Bike Relay event on the weekend of 8th/9th of July. The event is being held near Salisbury, and runs from 8pm Saturday, to 8am Sunday, so it's a camping weekend. Teams of 4, just £25/person to enter. You rotate your laps between team members, so you get some rest / sleep / chance to eat in between efforts. Sounds good fun - if you think so, and would like to ride, please contact Dave Wardle who is collating entries (01895 677720 - reasonable hours please). You don't have to be an experienced mountain biker or fast to take part, so don't worry about being "good enough" to enter. Sure it will be good fun, as the 24 Hour "Mountain Mayhem" event I did a couple of years ago certainly was. Speak to Dave if you need more information.
For the Bank Holiday event, the Youths 15/16 years (race 1 in the London Series 2006), will now race with the Tristar 13/14 Age Group at 11 a.m., rather than as part of the Adults / Junior event over the longer distance at 9 a.m.. The Youths will now race 0.75km run / 10.5km bike (7-lap cycle) / 1.5km run. A revised entry form can be found here, and full details of all of the days events can be be found on the Race Page. Please let me know if anything is unclear! Cheers, John.
After a trial race last year, we will be running 3 Aquathlon events at Eton College Open Air pool during the summer. The distances will be (approx) 750m swim / 5km run. The pool is a very large Open Air pool, and wetsuits may be worn if desired. Full details / entry forms / costs etc to follow in due course, but for now, please add the following dates to your diary: Tuesday 13th June Each race will begin at 7:30pm, and will no doubt be followed by a "swift half" in a local Pub! I've updated the Hillingdon Fixture list, which is available in either Excel or Word format for you to print out and keep.

I really enjoyed meeting and training with you all, even Cyril!!. I have now moved down to Swindon and will certainly miss the training sessions I did with you all. Best wishes for the future. From Jacob... "I'm entered in a team for this years Microsoft UK challenge trophy competition against 125 other company teams competing over 4 days in the Cambrian mountains. The event is a major fund raising event for the NSPCC [£450,000 last year]. Parts of the multi-stage event require the use of a mountain bike. This is the reason for my email. I did a practice event last weekend on my brothers old mountain bike which, being too small for my 6 foot 3 body, caused great leg discomfort. I am therefore seeking to borrow a mountain bike of a suitable size for the four days in early June. I'm not looking for anything high quality [you should see the bike I was on] as long as it fits my height. Please sponsor me for this years Microsoft UK Challengers Trophy aiming to raise £500,000 for the NSPCC. Event details and an on line sponsorship form: http://www.sponsorshipform.org.uk/home.asp" If you can help, please contact Jacob Gloor by email or phone 020 8456 7148 or mobile 0780 136 8848
A couple of changes to next weekend's (1st May) Adult Novice / Kids Duathlons. The Youths (15/16) and Juniors (17/18) event will now be combined with the Adult Novice event. As a result, race distances will now be 1.5km / 12km / 1.5km (1 lap run / 8 laps bike / 1 lap run), and start time will be 9:00 a.m., NOT 11:45 a.m. as previously advertised. Full details have been mailed out to entrants over the weekend, and should be with you all on Monday 25th or Tuesday 26th April. We are still accepting entries on the day for the event, though please ensure that you register for your event at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start time - don't leave it until the last minute! A revised entry form for the events is available here. Remember, the Hillingdon Duathlon forms Race 1 of the London Region Triathlon Series (ENTRY FORM) for the Tristar 9/10, 11/12, 13/14 and Youth 15/16 Age Groups, and as such is a qualifying event for the Regional Team to represent London in the Inter-Regional Championships in September.

It would seem that a couple of our members are not satisfied with a good old-fashioned, cold English winter. RAF man Steve Hyett has been enjoying (?!) life in that well know triathlon paradise of.... Baghdad International Airport. I'd like to say I'm jealous, but I'm certainly not. Steve reports: "I hope to be back sometime in Feb - most probably in time for the last of the hilly chiltern reliability rides - which after doing no more than a couple of 30 min exercise bike rides a week in 40 degree heat could be a challenge. Anyway, life's good, putting on weight - I have a brand new 25m open air pool to myself each morning, the sea is 30C and its too hot to run - (so I don't need to keep thinking of new excuses not to run). So train safe and have fun, I can't wait to get back to cold dark nights swimming at Yeiwsley - that's a lie actually". To prove that it's not all Baghdad and combat kit, his new open water training site looks a little different to Heron Lake at Wraysbury! Meanwhile, over in Thailand, Dan Bingham has been mixing it with the triathlon elite with an excellent 19th place overall at the Laguna Phuket Triathlon in a field approaching 500 entrants. Looks as though he was also winner of the M25 category, and cycled faster than most of the top elite women including Barb Lindquist, Carol Montgomery & Lisa Bentley. Full results here. Congrats Dan - I guess we'll see you on a cold and wet Sunday soon.....?!
Just a reminder that the main season may be finished, but that doesn't mean it's time to pack away your bike until the Spring. Our Sunday club rides have been in full swing for a couple of months now, with a consistently good turn-out every week, whatever the weather. Meeting Point is at The "Nurseries", Denham Roundabout, which is 200m along the A40 (Oxford Road) next to Junction 1 of the M40. Should you need it, there is plenty of parking available if you don't fancy riding to Denham - so no excuses that it's too far away! Ride starts at 9:30 a.m. sharp. Rides are of the 'steady' variety at the moment with a mix of flats / hills around the Buckinghamshire countryside. We've typically been doing between 2.5 and 4 hours, often with a tea/coffee stop along the way. There is the opportunity to cover more distance or turn back early should you wish. A couple of tips and reminders: 1) Wear gloves - We've been lucky with the weather to date, but it isn't
summer - you need warm gloves (so don't forget them Amrit!). 3) Bring Inner tubes & a pump - Punctures happen (rarely thankfully), but be prepared. (Girls - a smile often helps to save your nails!) 4) Keep warm - You don't need the latest Gore-Tex Windstopper (though it helps...!), but make sure you have plenty of layers on. If in doubt, wear more! Overshoes are particularly useful to keep your feet snug & warm and are a HIGHLY recommended (and cheap) purchase if you don't have them already. 5) Helmet - Obvious really? Look forward to seeing you on Sundays - if you have any questions on the Sunday rides, feel free to contact me. Cheers.

Tonight saw our last Monday evening Duathlon of the season at a cool, but dry Minet Park Cycle Circuit. We hope you enjoyed the 2004 events which seem to have been blessed with excellent weather throughout. Many thanks to all of our 'regulars', plus those who have been introduced to multi-sport for the first time during the season. We will be organising one more Duathlon in the Autumn (November), again at Minet Park, which will probably be a Sunday race over a longer course of 2.5 miles / 15 miles / 1 mile. Details when available, will of course be published on the website. Full results from tonight, and indeed all Hillingdon organised events form 2004 can be found from the 2004 Results page.
There will be an important meeting about the future of triathlon in the London Region next TUESDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 2004 at 6.30pm 8.30pm. The venue will be: SkillsActive Head Office: Castlewood House, 77-91 New Oxford Street, London, WC1A 1PX The meeting will firstly discuss Londons One Stop Plan (OSP). The London OSP requires the input from the triathlon community of London. Secondly, to help coordinate triathlon in London, an efficient and structured communications network needs to be devised to ensure the proposed plans and strategies can work. All are welcome. For further details please contact Tim Weeks on 07739 526558 or email him at timweeks@britishtriathlon.org
A great turn-out for the last club time trial of the year last night (amazing what bribing people with free food will do...). As well at the final event of the year, it also incorporated the annual handicap event, giving everyone a chance to win. Steve Wrapson and Kate Beckett both recorded personal bests (congrats to Kate for going 'sub-30'), but it still wasn't enough for either of them to take first place, as that honour went to Roger 'Mad Dog' Knox just edging out Simon Claridge by 11 seconds. Full results for the night can be found here, while a summary of the 2004 time trial events (Excel file) is also available here.
This thursday is your last chance of the year to record a time on the Amersham Road Course (start/finish in Great Missenden). The 10-mile TT will also be include a 'handicap' event within it, meaning everyone has a chance to win. All Tristar members are encouraged to attend, and in order to bribe you along, we will be retiring to the pub afterwards for a FREE meal / drinks. First rider starts at 7.45pm
PROMPT, so please aim to sign on in the Great Missenden Car Park by
7.15pm.
Results are now available from today's race, the final event of our 3 race series. Please advise the webmaster if you spot any errors or omissions. (RACE NUMBER 253 IN THE DUATHLON - Can you let me know who you are!) Congratulations to today's winners - Chris Heape for the men, improving on his 5th place last month. For the women, Fiona Ford completed a clean sweep by winning all 3 of the series events. Dan Saith overcame a deficit from the run to finish first in the Duathlon. The plethora of good results from Tristars members appeared to be a direct result of the excessive carbo-loading undertaken at Clark's party until the early hours this morning.... or perhaps they were escaping a 'little chat' with Colette, or could it be they were chasing the god-like image of Clark 'Jesus' Schofield in a loin cloth !!! (You had to be there, you really did.....) For the series overall, honours go to our own Steve Hyett who despite being a veteran was the highest placed points scorer. With Steve taking the overall award, the Veterans prize went to Glenn Helsby, with Robert Doyle first Super-Vet. For ladies, Fiona Ford was a clear winner, with Danita Tinn finishing as first lady veteran. Dave Towers recorded his fastest time to take the Duathlon series trophy. Best wishes also to race number 159, J Ndiritu, who had a nasty fall on the bike - best wishes with your recovery. Many thanks to Jacob Gloor and G Lubnor who both stopped to ensure he was ok. Finally, many thanks to everyone who has assisted with running these races, notably Race Director Dave Wardle who puts in an enormous amount of work for these events, plus all of the marshalls, canoeists, time-keepers, referees, supporters and anyone else I may have forgotten! Hope you all enjoyed the series - if you did, please let us know. Also, if you think we could improve on anything for next year, we would welcome your feedback. See you again next year! (watch out for the shark...)
Did you wear an 'Orca Predator 2' wetsuit at the Hillingdon Triathlon on 30th May? If so, please can you check that you have the correct suit / size. One of the competitors, Joe Richardson, has an Orca wetsuit (a size 6) from the event, however he is 6ft 4' and his suit should be a size 9 or 10... Perhaps (?) you raced at Windsor yesterday and suddenly found your wetsuit seemed a little large? PLEASE CHECK YOUR WETSUIT? Should you find you have the wrong one, please contact Joe ASAP BY email, or give him a call on 07930 416896
Calling all Tristar members - Are you racing this Sunday? If not, why not come along and help with marshalling the event? All members are encouraged to come along and will be most welcome - it's a fun morning, honest! After the race, we'll be going for drinks / food to the 'Coy Carp' in Harefield - drinks are free... incentive enough? The race starts at 8 a.m., and we're normally all done and dusted by 11 a.m., convenient for opening time... see you there.
Once again the Triathlon Series is proving so popular that Race 3 on 20th June is now full. The provisional start list / race numbers for Race 3 have now been published (Excel Format). Also, overall standings for the Series after Races 1 & 2 are now available. Please direct any queries on these items to the webmaster. I look forward to seeing you all on 20th June.
Clark Schofield would like to invite all Tristar members to his housewarming Party on Saturday 19th June. From 5pm, there will be a BBQ - his address is 38 Rofant Road, Northwood, Middlesex, HA6 3BE. There is a twist however - the party has a Christmas theme! Please bring along some crackers and prezzies (£2 max) for the 'Secret Santa'...
Results are now available from today's event, Race 2 in the 3 race series (UPDATED Monday 31st May, 11 a.m.). Please advise the webmaster if you spot any errors or omissions. Hopefully (?!) we have correct split times for 100% of the field. Congratulations to today's winners - Alistair Brown (last week's Duathlon winner) who finished almost 2 minutes clear of Patrick Brown, who in turn pushed last weeks winner Dave Simpson into 3rd place. John Griffen took the vets prize finishing 4th overall. In the ladies event, Fiona Ford repeated her win of last week, with Nicola Juniper taking second and Libby Cameron retaining 3rd position. A smaller Duathlon field saw Richard Xerri a comfortable winner for the men, with C Powell the first female. A special mention to James Ruffell teamed with his dad Richard, who at just 11 year's old showed many of the senior athletes how to run! There are a few places remaining for the last event in the series on 20th June - please enter as soon as possible as we will be full again before race day. Entry Forms can be found here
Once again, demand has outstriped supply, and race 2 in the Series at Harefield is now closed. There will be NO ENTRIES ON THE DAY. The start list for the event can be found here. Your last chance to enter this year is the third and final race on 20th June.
What a glorious day! Let's hope the weather holds for races 2 and 3. Provisional Results are now available for today's event. Please let me know if you have any queries or spot any errors. Well done to our winners: Dave Simpson (who had to finish like Mario Cippolini to edge out Gary Dykes), and Fiona Ford in the ladies event. In the Duathlon, Alistair Brown finished first in a small, but high quality field. Apologies also to Glen Helsby, who was the 4th Male veteran finisher, but was overlooked at the presentation - my fault I'm afraid...sorry. There are only a few places available for the Race 2 and Race 3 - as of today, we are unlikely to be accepting Entries on the Day. Hope you enjoyed the race - if you did let us know, if you didn't tell us how we can improve for next time!
As posted last week on this news page, as expected we have reached our race limit for Race 1 this Sunday. There will be NO ENTRIES ON THE DAY. Entries are still available for Races 2 and 3 on 30th May and 20th June, but don't delay. Details and entry forms can be found here
Congratulations to Ian Birch and Ted Hamilton who won the 50-54, and 55-59 Age Groups respectively at the first round of the Eton Sprints at Dorney Lake today. Results here.
Heron Lake, Wraysbury, is again open for Open Water swim training to get yourself ready for the race season. The lake is open every weekend from MAY through to SEPTEMBER between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Many Tristar members are 'regulars' at these sessions, typically in the water by 7:30 a.m (Saturdays). Fees for swimming are payable to Heron Lake Swimmers who are now organising the facility, and are £3.50 per swim. However, save yourself some money by purchasing a swim-card (10 swims), which via a club is just £20 (i.e. £2 per session). See Dave for details. During the summer they plan to hold a 6-race series of Swim/Run Aquathlons - details to be published on www.sbrsports.com soon. UPDATE (3rd June 2004) - The first Aquathlon (swim/run event) will be held @ 7 a.m. on Saturday 19th June. Cost is £5 plus usual lake entry fee. Book up at the lake, or contact Martin at SBR Heron Lake is the home of the British Disabled Water-Ski Association, and is just off junction 13 of the M25. Bring along your wetsuit (and some post-swim coffee!) for a great start to the weekend.
If you are planning to compete in the first event of the 2004 Hillingdon Triathlon Series on May 23rd - get your entries in NOW! We fully expect the event to be sold out by this coming weekend, which will mean that entries-on-the-day will be very unlikely. The events are ideal for all from Novice to Elite, and are held over the unusual format of swim-run-bike. Details and entry forms can be found here. For those of you that have entered already, race details are due to be sent out this Thursday (13th May).
The final event (Race 3) in the 2004 Hillingdon Triathlon Series has been brought forward a week to Sunday 20th June @ 8 am. Held at Harefield Outdoor Activities Centre, the events are probably the longest running triathlon series in the country, and attract competitors of all standards. The races are held over distances of 600m lake swim / 6km run / 22km cycle (swim-run-bike format). For those that don't want to get wet, a Duathlon (run-bike) is held in conjunction with the Triathlon over the same course. Entry forms are available here.
Our first Duathlon of the year, originally scheduled for Sunday 28th March in Harefield, has now been switched to Minet Park (Hillingdon Cycle Circuit), and will be held on Saturday 27th March @ 2pm. This will be the first of NINE Duathlons held at the circuit this year. Full details of the Minet Park Duathlons can be found here, while a complete listing of Tristar events for 2004 is also available (Excel file).
